What is a TOG Rating and which TOG do I Need

What is a TOG Rating?

What is a TOG Rating?  TOG stands for ‘Thermal Overall Grade’ and is the unit of measurement used to determine the thermal insulation of a duvet (and other products).  Basically, how hot it keeps you.  If you’re asking yourself, “What is a TOG Rating?”, read on and find out!

What is a TOG Rating?

A common misunderstanding is that the tog rating is an indicator of the weight or quality of a duvet. This is the not true.

A duvet keeps you warm at night by trapping your body heat under the duvet with you.  The TOG rating describes the “thermal resistance” of your duvet, that is, the amount of heat it can trap with you in bed.  Very roughly, the higher the TOG, the warmer the duvet will be.  We say “roughly” because duvets tend to be tested in laboratory environments, which may not take in to consideration how a duvet is draped over you, or wrapped around you.  However, it is a widely accepted measure of warmth and can be replied upon.

Traditionally, duvets are chosen according to the current season.  A 4.5 TOG duvets would be used in the warmer summer months and higher TOGs, like 13.5 are used during the colder winter months.  This makes sense, however modern homes, guest houses and hotels are often heated anyway, meaning there are no real cold months any more – inside, at least.  Throughout Europe, the most common TOG duvets tend to be between 10.5 and 13.5, but many centrally heated bedrooms can be warm enough for the use of the lower, 4.5 TOG.

What is the Best TOG Rating for You?

That’s a tricky question.  Different people in different bedrooms prefer different temperatures at different times of the year.  Perhaps the most ‘normal’ use of different TOG duvets would be a lightweight 4.5 TOG in summer and a heavier 14.5 in winter, but it may not be as simple as that.  One piece of information we’re aware of, is that women tend to feel warmer in bed,
