Bed Sizes and Bed Linen Size Guide - Kerry Linen

Bed Sizes – Standard Irish Bed Measurements

Bed Sizes – Ireland/UK ‘Standard’ Bed Sizes.  there are a number of ‘standards’ when it comes to bed and mattress sizes, but we have detailed what is generally considered to be the standard for Ireland (the same as the UK).  At KerryLinen.ie, we specialise in the most common bed sizes – Single, Double and King Size, although Superking bedding is available on request.

Bed Sizes – What are the ‘Standard’ Sizes in Ireland?

Ireland uses the same ‘standards’ as the UK.  While there are many other standards, including the American and European standards, we stick to the most common bed sizes here in Ireland.  We always recommend you measure your bed before buying bed linen.  While your bed may look like a normal Double, it could be, for example, a European size.

A standard Double sized mattress in Ireland measures 135cm x 190cm (53″ x 75″). In continental Europe however a standard double sized mattress will measure in at 140cm x 200cm (55″ x 79″), meaning your fitted sheets will be stretched to fit the bed.  with cotton Fitted Sheets, this may well cause tearing.  Not good.  Always measure your bed if you aren’t 100% sure of its size.

Single Bed Size

The standard Single Bed size in Ireland measures three feet wide, by six feet, three inches long.  That’s roughly 90cm wide by 190cm long.

Double Bed Size

The standard Double Bed size in Ireland measures four feet, six inches wide, by six feet, three inches long.  That’s roughly 135cm wide by 190cm long.

King Size Bed Size

The standard King Size Bed size in Ireland measures five feet wide, by six feet, six inches long.  That’s roughly 150cm wide by 200cm long.

Depth of Mattress

The depth of your mattress can vary, as there are no specific ‘standard’ size guidelines.  Mattress depths can vary between, roughly, 8 and 14 inches (about 20cm to 35cm).  Again, it is important to measure your mattress before you purchase any new bedding.  This applies particularly to Fitted Sheets, as they are specifically made to wrap around the corners of your mattress.

More expensive mattresses with many more layers, can be very deep – some up to 24 inches! – and you would need to buy special, ‘deep fit’ Fitted Sheets.  We currently stock one ‘deep fit’ range.

Cotton vs Polycotton – which is best?  That’s a difficult question and all depends on what you want.  Cotton is more expensive, but polycotton is way more durable and long-lasting.  Cotton tends to be softer, but polycotton brings a crisp and clean feel to your bedding.

Cotton vs Polycotton

It’s all a matter of preference!  Cotton feels softer on your skin, but polycotton feels crisp and fresh on your bed.  Cotton is less strong and more likely to tear, whereas polycotton is a much stronger material, less likely to tear.

Cotton is also notoriously awkward to keep clean.  It requires lower temperatures, meaning a less thorough wash and is considerably more difficult to iron.  Polycotton however, can be washed a temperatures up to 60°, meaning a much cleaner wash.  It can be tumble dried without any problems and is much easier to iron.  Combining cotton and polyester makes the garment less prone to piling and static.  One of the main advantages of the cotton-polyester blend is that it is more wrinkle-free.

Polycotton is Strong & Durable

Polycotton is a highly durable material as Polyester contains strong plastic-like substances, making it far less likely to rip or tear.  The durable nature of Polycotton makes it an very popular choice in commercial situations such as hotels, where bed sheets are often changed often.

Polycotton is a blend of natural cotton and synthetic polyester.  Both Cotton and Polycotton bed sheets are easy to care for, both types of fabric can be washed on normal cycles in your washing machine and can be dried in the dryer. It is advised to wash cotton at lower temperatures (around 30° or 40°) however Polycotton can be washed at higher temperatures – up to 60° – for ultimate cleanliness. Washing natural fabrics like cotton 60 degrees may (most likely, will) cause them to shrink, however polycotton will not. That said, there are a number of types of cotton and polycotton, so always follow the manufacturer’s guidelines when washing and drying your sheets and bed linen.
